A borescope (or bore scope, boroscope) is an instrument used in technical situations where direct line-of-sight observation is not feasible or possible. A borescope is an optical device consisting of a rigid or flexible tube with an eyepiece on one end, an objective lens on the other linked together by a relay optical system in between. The optical system is usually surrounded by optical fibers used for illumination of the remote object and a rigid or flexible protective outer sheath.
A fiberscope is a flexible fiber optic bundle with an eyepiece at one end, and a lens at the other. It is similar to borescopes, except it can be very long and flexible. Quartz fiberscopes can reach lengths of up to 300 ft. It is also used for inspection work, often to examine small components in tightly packed equipment, when the inspector cannot easily access the part requiring inspection. Fiberscopes are used in medicine, machining, computer repair, espionage, locksmithing, safecracking, and computer forensics, among many other uses.
Endoscope is an instrument used for looking inside and typically refers to looking inside the human body for medical reasons. Endoscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic medical procedure that is used to assess the interior surfaces of an organ by inserting a tube into the body.
Whether borescope, boroscope, fiberscope, fiber scope, fiber optic scope, endoscope, video otoscope and other terms, all can be classified as Lightscope. As you would know by now, light scopes may be rigid or flexible, and works by illuminating a remote object normally inaccessible, to present an internal image to the viewer's eye.
A light scope may be fitted with a magnifying device and a way to illuminate the work being inspected, usually illumination fibers are contained in the insertion tube itself. The eyepiece may be fitted with a coupler lens to allow the light scope to be used with imaging devices such as a video or CCD camera to record the images.
Light scopes are well suited to certain tasks such as inspecting automotive cylinders, fuel injectors, hydraulic manifold bodies and gunsmithing. Medical endoscopes may require different standards from normal light scopes.
